Two Complaint Review Committees have decided to keep Beloved and Waterland in the school district.
"Beloved" and "Waterland" have been used for almost ten years in the AP English curriculum without ever having been officially vetted by the School Board as stipulated by the Michigan Department of Education. The content of these books has also been interpreted as being pornographic by many in the community.
Superintendent Hughes at the January 10th School Board Meeting states books were never vetted (Video).
Waterland had been censored for years by adhesive labels. The details regarding the original parental complaint is being guarded by an AP English Teacher. The teacher said the labels were a compromise between the teacher and the complaining parent.
